Test affiliate links and creator offers before a creator publishes

Test a creator's affiliate link and discount code on a phone through redirects, mobile checkout and payment. Match one authorized order to the offer terms, creator credit and commission.

A colored thread passes from a phone through redirect gates to a shopping basket and matching affiliate token.

Test a creator's link before it goes live by following it on a phone, building eligible and ineligible carts, and placing an authorized test order. Then check two records against what the merchant approved. The store order must show the right items, discount, shipping, tax and total. The affiliate conversion for the same order ID must name the right creator, eligible order value, commission and status.

Each check proves only its own step. A destination page that loads, a code the cart accepts or a recorded click does not prove that the shopper paid the advertised price. A correct checkout total does not prove that the creator received credit.

This procedure covers links that send shoppers to an external store, and it uses Shopify for platform rules. You can adapt the order of steps to another commerce platform. For purchases inside TikTok Shop, use the separate TikTok Shop affiliate order test.

Agree on the offer and the credit rule before buying

Ask the store owner and the affiliate program manager to confirm these terms in writing:

  • The creator will share one exact link and one exact code, and the link may pass through a link-in-bio page or a shortener.
  • The offer covers named products and variants, and the merchant lists any excluded items and says whether subscriptions qualify.
  • The offer has a minimum spend or quantity, customer eligibility rules, permitted markets and use limits, or the merchant says it has none.
  • The offer starts and ends at set times in the store's time zone.
  • The merchant says whether the code combines with automatic discounts, other codes or free shipping.
  • The program has a commission rate and currency, and it states how discounts, tax and shipping count toward commission.
  • The program has an attribution window and a rule for which link or code wins when several qualify.
  • The program documents the first status a conversion gets and how long reports take to show it.

Save the approved terms beside the test record. Use the merchant's current product listing for SKU, price and availability, because an old campaign brief may be out of date.

Shopify's amount-off discount documentation describes product, customer and market eligibility settings. It also says discount timing follows the store's configured time zone. Record those settings before you call a rejected code a bug.

If link and coupon ownership can conflict, first decide how links and discount codes share credit. A test needs a defined winner. If the destination already names the wrong product or offer, fix it with the creator landing-page checklist before you test payment.

Choose a test method that does not disrupt customers

Ask the merchant to approve the test method, the spending limit and the cleanup plan. Name who will stop fulfillment, cancel or refund the order, and keep the test commission out of a real payout. A test should not send an unintended parcel or customer message. Do not ask a creator to make an undisclosed self-purchase to see what happens.

Shopify supports simulated transactions through its test payment gateway or Shopify Payments test mode. Shopify warns that customers cannot place live orders while payment providers are in test mode. Never switch a live store into test mode without the merchant's approval and an agreed window. Use gateway test payment details only in the matching test mode, with authorized test identities and addresses.

Some checks need a real purchase. Shopify's processing guide describes a real order followed by cancellation and refund. It tells merchants to review payment provider terms and warns that some fees are not returned. Get approval for that spend before you place the order.

An affiliate integration may need a real order too. Refersion's test-order instructions tell merchants to select an affiliate, generate a test link and place an actual order. Some integrations need the order marked paid before they process it. Shopify also says simulated transactions do not appear in payouts or reports. A simulated checkout that passes in Shopify therefore cannot prove affiliate attribution or live reporting.

Keep each limit visible in the test record. A simulated card success does not prove that a live mobile wallet works. If an advertised payment method cannot be tested, record it as unverified.

Run the provider baseline first

Start with the affiliate provider's documented setup. Refersion recommends Chrome Incognito with tracking unblocked for its test, and it says Safari Private Browsing does not suit that test. A pass here shows that the integration can record a conversion. It does not show what ordinary mobile visitors will experience.

Run the mobile checkout script

Use a real phone for the shopper-facing run. Record its operating system, browser or social app, and version. Start with an empty cart and note whether the customer is signed in. Start at the entry point the creator will publish, in an authorized preview or controlled test placement, and tap through the bio page, shortener, destination and checkout. If the publishing app's route cannot be tested before launch, record that gap. A pasted desktop URL is a different route.

Shopify recommends testing mobile devices, account states, discount codes, shipping addresses, payment methods and failed transactions in its processing guide. This table turns that list into a recommended script.

On the phone, also check that you can find the code field, read a rejection message without zooming, and come back from a payment handoff. If a wallet appears, read its final amount before you confirm. A different payment path needs its own evidence.

For offers limited to some customers, run both an eligible and an ineligible test identity. Check the approved rule before you treat a returning customer's rejection as a bug. The existing-customer offer matrix helps define those cases.

Repeat the purchase path in the cases below, on the mobile operating systems and browsers your audience uses. Each run that produces an order needs its own order ID.

Use separate authorized test sessions so earlier clicks do not affect later cases. Record any change to blockers or privacy settings. Keep the real-world cases at their ordinary settings. A result you got only after turning protections off belongs in the baseline notes.

A tracking parameter does not have to stay visible in the address bar. Compare each redirect with the integration's documented capture method instead. A clean destination URL cannot tell you whether the referral was stored. Treat cross-device purchases as unverified unless the provider documents support and you test that exact path.

If the creator will post the link in a Story, also plan the Story link path before launch.

A consent-declined case can pass when the expected outcome is that a tracking event does not run. Set that expectation from the implementation documentation and the store's approved privacy configuration. Do not weaken consent settings to get a green result.

Shopify's custom-pixel testing guide explains that a pixel can wait for consent. It also says third-party consent tools must sync the shopper's choice through Shopify's Customer Privacy API. If that sync fails, a pixel may stay inactive after a shopper accepts tracking.

That guidance covers custom pixels. Confirm how your own affiliate integration works before you assume it uses the same mechanism. Keep a pixel event apart from the credit that follows it. Shopify's helper checks event subscription and callback execution, and Shopify recommends provider-specific checks to confirm that the third party received the event.

Work through the minimum-spend boundary

Consider this hypothetical Shopify offer:

  • Code MOBILE15 gives 15% off selected one-time-purchase products.
  • Eligible products must total at least $50.
  • An unrelated accessory is excluded from the offer.
  • No earlier discounts apply, and shipping costs $6.

Shopify says product-specific amount-off minimums count eligible products only. Shipping and taxes do not count. Amount-off discounts also do not reduce shipping charges.

Hypothetical cartExpected discountExpected result
$48 eligible item plus $10 excluded accessory$0Minimum not met, despite $58 in products
$50 eligible item$7.50$42.50 in products, plus $6 shipping, before tax
$60 eligible item plus $10 excluded accessory$9$61 in products, plus $6 shipping, before tax

For the second cart, the expected total before tax is $48.50. Record the actual tax separately, because this example names no tax jurisdiction. If checkout shows free shipping, check the shipping configuration and any other active offer. Do not assume the creator's percentage code caused it.

Reconcile one order all the way to commission

The next example is also hypothetical and uses no platform default or observed result. Assume USD, one eligible item, a percentage commission, and an order-level calculation rounded to two decimal places.

Hypothetical order T-01Amount or rule
Item price before discount$80.00
Item discount$8.00
Shipping$5.00, excluded from commission
Tax$6.16, excluded from commission
Paid total$83.16
Eligible base$80.00 minus $8.00 = $72.00
Commission rate12.5%
Expected commission$72.00 multiplied by 0.125 = $9.00

The eligible base is the amount the program uses to calculate commission. Commission equals the eligible base multiplied by the commission rate. Under these terms, shipping and tax count toward the paid total and earn no commission. Replace these assumptions with the program's own rules, including its rounding method.

Match that amount and the creator against the same order ID in the affiliate system. Check that only one payable conversion exists. Keep the system's status label as it is, because recorded, pending, approved and paid are different checkpoints.

Refersion says test conversions can take up to ten minutes to appear and arrive as pending whatever the settings. Its instructions suggest contacting support if the order is still missing after about an hour. Use your own provider's timing for other tools.

Keep evidence someone else can repeat

Create one record per case in a test sheet with these columns:

Text
Case ID and tester
Run time and store time zone
Store environment and authorized test method
Phone, operating system, browser or app version
Consent choice and blocker settings
Creator entry URL and final URL
Customer eligibility and signed-in state
Product SKU, variant, quantity and purchase type
Code, other active offers and expected result
Observed discount or exact error
Shipping region, rate, charge and tax
Final amount and currency
Payment method, outcome and store order ID
Affiliate conversion ID, credited creator, commission and status
Redacted screenshots and merchant record references
Pass, fail or unverified, with owner and retest date
Cancellation, refund, shipment prevention and cleanup

Keep addresses, payment details and personal account information out of shared screenshots and marketing sheets. Keep only the evidence your team needs to reproduce an issue.

Modash's Shopify affiliate-tracking article discusses why links and code redemptions can produce different records. Fill in both the checkout fields and the affiliate fields for each case, because one can pass while the other fails.

Work backward from the missing evidence:

  • If no store order exists, look at the checkout or payment failure first.
  • If the order exists without a conversion, check payment status, reporting delay, consent, integration errors and the referral path.
  • If the conversion names the wrong creator or amount, compare the link and code priority and the commission exclusions with the agreed rules.
  • If the discount or total is wrong, compare the cart with the approved eligibility, minimum spend and combination rules.
  • If two conversions share one order ID, give the integration owner both records before any payout.

Modash's affiliate software comparison lists order-level reporting and returns handling among its criteria. Apply the same split during testing. Keep the purchase evidence, then check the cancellation or refund outcome as its own step. For the payout side, explain the affiliate payout statement with its return adjustments.

Check the offer terms and the disclosure

For a US promotion, the FTC's advertising guidance says claims must be truthful and supported, and needed qualifying information should appear where people can notice and understand it. Compare exclusions and minimum-spend terms across the creator's copy, the destination page and checkout.

The FTC's endorsement guidance calls for a clear, conspicuous explanation of the financial relationship near the recommendation. An affiliate-link label alone may not tell viewers that the creator earns money. Treat both reviews as operational checks, because whether a disclosure is adequate depends on context and jurisdiction.

Decide whether the creator can publish

Hold the link if an eligible shopper cannot redeem the offer, if the total contradicts the approved terms, if an advertised payment route stays broken, or if the right creator does not get credit. A correct rejection for an excluded product can pass when the terms and the message explain it.

After any fix, repeat the failed case and the main eligible purchase. Ask the merchant to confirm test-mode removal, order cleanup and fulfillment safeguards before ordinary sales resume.

Send the creator the tested final URL, the code, the visible restrictions and the publication time only after the merchant signs off on the tested paths. Attach each unresolved case with an owner, and name the person who will recheck the link if its destination or checkout changes.
